Dungeons and Dragons adventures page 8

The next morning arrived with the rising of the sun to the east. The air was calm and day was beautiful. The heroes prepared a quick meal of dried fruits and hard tack. All the sounds from the gnarly forest were as they should have been. Birds chirped and forest creatures stirred. The heroes broke camp and headed south away from the road, and away from detection. All of the heroes thoughts lied in wonder as to what lay in store for them. Equipped in their new attire, they looked humble and nonthreatening. they proceeded for about three hours wending their way through the forest when a crashing sound echoed in the distance. It lent them moment to pause as it sounded like a tree was felled. The heroes quickly, yet quietly made their way towards the commotion. A large ogre and some 40 orcs were busy felling trees for whatever purpose. They had only begun to clear a small bit of land and didn't seem to notice the heroes. Then with the sounding of a horn in the distance dropped what they were doing and made a hasty exit to the south. The horn sounded again and the heroes decided to follow at a distance.

The pc's make their way south of Safeton near the edge of the gnarly forest, and after a days march, they make camp. The road south is not much travelled these days, as the imminent war with Pomarjj has led all trade and communications to be halted. The pc's had only heard of the rampant slavery of all races under the orc hordes. The orcs were led by Turosh Mak and it was rumored that it was his desire for expansion combined with a ten year cycle of blood lust inherant amongst all orcs that was responsible for the oncoming invasion from the south. The heroes of Hamlet were apprehensive as to what terrors they would find, but knew that someone had to go. Someone had to find out what was in store for the future of all elves, dwarves and men. The war north coincidentally seemed to be growing in ferocity as well. It was widely rumored that Iuz the Evil, was amassing his forces for an assault to the lands south of his empire. It was said that he had united the numerous barbarian hordes underneath his banner. The heroes knew that fighting a war on two flanks would be harrowing to say the least. They discussed the plans to circumvent all larger towns and act as pilgrims, heading south to the ocean. If that didn't work then deadly force was allowed, as long as all evidence was disposed of. The night was warm and calm and although physically comfortable, no one amongst them rested well.

Argus and Bogg chat amongst themselves for a while, periodically scanning the room for the people they were supposed to meet. After some time, they agree to meet in the morning. Argus leaves the tavern while Bogg stays to mingle some more. The pc's do not escape his mingling ways and eventually even they must interact with him. He introduces himself and asks the adventurers their names and business. All remain silent except for Slade, a paladin of Pelor. Slade introduces himself and the rest of the party. "I am sorry for the slow introduction, we were being careful, we had to be sure we had the right people", said Slade. "Well met heroes of Hamlet, I have a summary of our orders, although Argus of Celene will brief you in the morrow", said Bogg. With that being said Bogg, Slade and the pc's make smalltalk for the rest of the night until resting in a common great room where many other slept. The accommodations weren't luxurious, but indeed they were cheap and nearby. The morning started with Argus awakening the party. They all met downstairs in the taverns bar area and ate a simple meal of boiled oats from the tavern kitchen. Argus told the pc's that their mission was to head south towards the Pomarjj. They were to infiltrate enemy lines and observe on orc army troop movements. They were to report back to the Barony of Hamlet with their findings. They were instructed to remain anonymous and cause little disruption. They were ordered above all things to not implicate Hamlet in any reconnaissance activities. The party was supplied with clothing appropriate for the Pomarjj. "You have been selected becuase of your particular combination of talents, the Barons and people of Hamlet, as well as the the entire free people of Celene, Greyhawk, Furyondy and many more, are all counting on your success." said Argus. The pc's took leave of Argus and Bogg and visited the guild shops for last minute provissions. After gathering all that they needed and set forth. South to the Pomarjj.

A large half ogre strides into the Green Goblet Tavern and those that don't know him are immediately taken aback with fear. The bar man quickly laughs and reaches under the bar for a oversized wooden bucket with a sturdy handle attached. "Welcome Bogg, been a while since you've graced us with that smile", said the bar man. Bogg exposed a wide toothy grin that moved all that saw it, moment to pause. His teeth were white and massive and underbite pronounced. The gaps between his teeth exposed a tongue that pressed out although it didnt affect his speech much. "I'm to meet some people from Hamlet and a tall elf" said Bogg in a low grumbly voice. "Have you seen anyone fitting the description?" Bogg asked. "Take a seat, we'll chat a while", said the bar man. Bogg sat at the bar and listened attentively to the bar man while drinking from his bucket. After a while, the half ogre smiles and drinks and proceeds to mingle with the other bar patrons for some time until Argus returns. The two immediately enter into quiet conversation. the pc's observe this...what do you do?

Argus stood up and scanned the room once again with a look of concern and a crinkled brow. "Where are you going?", said Alyssa, grabbing and stroking his upper arm. "We were just getting to know each other, and I want to talk some more." Alyssa coyed. "I have a feeling you will see me again very soon, I must check the other taverns and pubs here in Safeton for these soldiers from Hamlet", said Argus. Alyssa just frownded, and with a sigh, slumped in her stool and shifted her gaze towards her wine glass. Argus tossed a few more cions on the bar and asked the bar man to "take good care of her, I will return shortly." The tall elf drew his hood over his head and strode out the bar room door. The PC's see this happen...what do you do?

"Well I'll sit with you until your friends arrive", the comely bar maid spoke, with a hint of playfulness in her voice. The tall elf set some coins on the bar and the bar man, not missing a beat, filled a glass of wine for the girl. "May i ask your name?" said the maid. "Argus Tyvaen, I hail from Celene, and what is your name?" said the elf. "My name is Alyssa, my father is a blacksmith here in Safeton" Alyssa said. "Well met, Alyssa." said Argus. "And you as well, Argus. Thanks for the drink" said Alyssa a sweet smile across her face. "I saw that boy try to stab you earlier, what was that all about, may i ask?" asked Alyssa. "Zealots in the service of Iuz or the Pomarjj i would imagine, there is constant danger in my path, you may fare better in life if you chose another patron to solicit" said Argus in a sarcastic tone. "I don't mind, I seek adventure, its so boring here in Safeton, there's never anything for a girl like me to do, beyond mingling in the tavern" said Alyssa, her smile replaced by a woeful frown. As she bit her lip in the most fllirtatious manner she could summon, Argus could not help but be aware her charms. "Buy me another drink handsome stranger?" Alyssa said batter her lashes. Argus put some more coins on the bar. The bar man was quick to serve another round. The PC's see this and not sitting very far away, hear every word....what do you do?

The tall hooded elf wheels around off his bar stool at the last moment possible and in one smooth motion both disarms and strikes the misguided youth. The youth, surprised runs out of the tavern clutching his face. The tall figure examines the dagger and wraps it in a piece of ragged leather, and places it in his pack. The commotion does not go unnoticed and the bar man is quick to offer his apologies and pours the tall elf a free flagon of the house brew. "Children of evil?", grumbles the tall elf. The elf then sits back on his bar stool and periodically scans the room for something or someone. "Where in Grey hawk are they?", he grumbles in a low tone. A beautiful fair haired maiden dressed in simple rags sits next to the elf and begins to pour forth her womanly charms. "I noticed you here sitting by yourself stranger, I was wondering if you wanted some company tonight?", said the girl. Th elf's expression did not change and he merely looked at her briefly and looked back at his flagon. "Suit yourself, you may sit if you wish but I am not here for pleasure.", said the elf. "What is it then, that you seek handsome stranger?", replied the girl, batting her deep blue eyes. "I am here to meet some soldiers from the Barony of Hamlet, although I don't know what they look like. If they aren't here by now, I expect them shortly.", said the elf sipping his ale.
